As reported by Billboard.biz last week, Jon Platt has been
named president creative - North America, it was officially
announced today by Warner/Chappell Music's chairman/CEO Cameron
Strang. In his new post, Platt will oversee the company's A&R
activities in North America, including Los Angeles, New York and
Nashville and also play a major role in shaping the company's
strategy. Platt, who previously held a similar post at EMI Music
Publishing, will report to Strang and will be based in Los Angeles.
"Jon's character, his leadership skills and his ability to identify, sign and nurture talent combine to make him one of the top executives in the music business," states Strang in the press release announcing Platt's appointment. "His unwavering commitment to songwriters and their music has led to his continued and long-term success. His approach makes him a perfect fit with Warner/Chappell and an outstanding addition to our senior team … as we continue to grown Warner/Chappell and strengthen the services we provide to our songwriters and publishing partners."

During his 17-year tenure at EMI, Platt signed a host of hitmakers in pop and R&B/hip-hop, including Jay-Z, Kanye West, Usher , Drake, Ludacris, Mary Mary, Young Jeezy and Snoop Dogg. In addition to signing Beyoncé, he also played a role in renegotiating deals for Pharrell Williams and Sean "Diddy" Combs. During that same period, EMI was named Billboard's publisher of the year for the past 12 years and won ASCAP Rhythm & Soul's publisher of the year award for 17 years.
Platt,
No. 87 on Billboard's inaugural Power 100 (Feb. 4), also serves as
vice chairman of the board of directors for the MusiCares Foundation
and sits on the board of the Living Legends Foundation.
During Friday evening's (Sept. 7) BMI Urban Music Awards, Warner/Chappell songwriter Lil Wayne shared the title of urban songwriter of the year with Drake, while Warner/Chappell producers Lex Luger and T-Minus picked up top urban producer awards. The company's catalog includes such standards as "Happy Birthday to You" and "Rhapsody in Blue" as well as the music of Eric Clapton, Green Day, Katy Perry, Led Zeppelin, Madonna, Paramore, Red Hot Chili Peppers, T.I. and .fun. Warner/Chappell also tied for the title of ASCAP's 2012 pop music publisher of the year and song of the year for "Just the Way You Are," written by Bruno Mars and Khalil "Cassius D. Kalb" Walton.
