Brandy rarely has a moment to rest nowadays. She recently wrapped up her stint as Chardonnay on The Game, she’s putting the finishing touches on her sixth studio album and she’s back as nurse Elisa Shayne on the second season of Lifetime's drama series, Drop Dead Diva, premiering this Sunday.
Generally outspoken in her everyday life, the former Moesha star says playing someone as docile as nurse Elisa wasn't difficult at all. "Elisa is similar to me. We have similar spirits,” she tells ESSENCE.com. “We believe in what we believe in. We go after what we want. Our children mean everything to us. It wasn't much I had to do."
Brandy says this season fans can expect to see Elisa reconnect with her old flame, attorney Jay Parker, who had rejected her last season.
As for her music, the singer says she’s taking more time to nurture her upcoming album. "It's not that the last project wasn't right," she says. "A lot of people were touched by that album. I just really have the chance to make all the right decisions in music and I want to take my time and do that. I don't want to make bad decisions with this project."
The album's title, Two Eleven, is a symbolic marker of Brandy's birthday and the date of Whitney Houston death. "The title, the whole album, my whole movement, everything that I'm doing is dedicated to Whitney Houston," adds Brandy. "I want to honor her for the rest of my life. I tell her that all the time."
"There is a picture of her and I on my piano,” she continues. “I play the piano almost every day and I always sing to her. I talk to her like she's still with me. The other night Waiting to Exhale was on TV. I went outside and came back in and "It's Not Right But It's Okay" was playing on TV. It's just weird moments when I feel like she's with me."
