'12-12-12' Album Pre-Orders Grow to 50,000

The pre-orders continue to come in for the "12-12-12 The Concert for Sandy Relief" album. iTunes' pre-orders for the set numbered around 50,000 through the close of business on Dec. 13, according to industry sources.

Through the evening of Dec. 12, the night of the superstar-filled benefit concert at New York's Madison Square Garden, there were about 40,000 pre-orders registered.

The Columbia Records album was scheduled for release on Dec. 18 at press time. But there is a chance it could hit iTunes over the Dec. 15-16 weekend. A track list for the set has yet to be made public, though it's assumed that it will feature at least 24 selections. That's the number of tracks advertised on its iTunes pre-order page at the present, though that number could change.

More than 50 songs were played at the show. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Paul McCartney, Kanye West and Alicia Keys, among many others, participated in the nearly six-hour concert to raise money for Hurricane Sandy relief.

The album will impact Billboard's charts once it has been delivered to customers, so pre-orders will only count once the album has actually been downloaded by the end-users. (That also means that not necessarily all of the so-far 50,000 pre-orders will ultimately be fulfilled.)

If the album goes live in iTunes before the close of business on Dec. 16 (the last day of the current Nielsen SoundScan sales tracking week), then the set could impact the new Billboard 200 revealed on Dec. 19. If it arrives on Dec. 17, then it will debut on the following week's tallies.
