While it used to be the ideal first job for a sixteen-year-old high school student, a McDonald’s in Massachusetts says it doesn’t want any. According to the Washington Examiner, this McDonald’s posted an ad for an open cashier position that required not only one to two years of experience, but also a Bachelor’s degree. Huh?
“Sadly we’ve taxed-and-spent our way to an economy in which there’s intense competition for just about any job,” Evan Feinberg, president of Washington-based youth advocacy group Generation Opportunity, told the Examiner. “Combine that with government meddling in the student loan market that has artificially inflated the cost of higher education and young people are getting screwed over even worse than the country overall.” With youth unemployment at 11.5 percent and student loan debt continually on the rise, Feinberg sounds about right.
This begs many questions: What college degree holder would ever want to apply for a cashier position at McDonald’s (no shade, but really though)? Is a college degree even necessary to be successful in a position like this? While yes, it is important to know your numbers and how to count money, but a degree? And what about the high school kids?
Some may think that having a college degree will mean better communication, manners and overall customer service, but there are some degree holders who lack one or all three. But, the job market isscarce for college grads so maybe this could at least be good for them.
