Billboard's top Pop artist of the last 20 years, Rihanna, is nominated in four categories: Artist of the Year, Favorite Female Artist – Pop/Rock, Favorite Female Artist – Soul/R&B and Favorite Album – Soul/R&B for Talk that Talk.

Other notable nominees include Usher who picked up three nominations.

This year's telecast will celebrate the awards' 40th anniversary. It will also be the first telecast since its creator Dick Clarke passed. The show's producer Larry Klein says the entire three-hour show will be a tribute to Clarke. "Terrific performances, outrageous acceptance speeches – those moments when you feel strong emotions... Dick used to say we're an entertainment show with awards in it and I like wall-to-wall music. It's a celebration of music."
