EXCLUSIVE//Renowned poet, author Maya Angelou dead at 86

TOP STORY// Award-winning author, renowned poet and civil rights activist Dr. Maya Angelou was found dead in her Winston-Salem, N.C., home Wednesday morning. She was 86.

Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Jones confirmed Angelou's death to Fox News. Police reportedly were at her home investigating. A press conference is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. ET.

Angelou, who rose from poverty as a child raised in St. Louis and Stamps, Ark., to become a cultural icon, gained widespread acclaim for her first book, her autobiography "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," making her one of the first African-American women to write a best-seller.

In 1998, she directed the film "Down in the Delta" about a drug-addicted woman who returns to the home of her ancestors in the Mississippi Delta. She was the poet chosen to read at President Bill Clinton's first inauguration in 1993. She wrote and read an original composition, "On the Pulse of Morning," which became a million-seller.

Major League Baseball announced last week that Angelou would not attend its 2014 Beacon Awards Luncheon, where she was to be honored, due to health concerns. Angelou also canceled an event in April in Fayetteville, Ark., because of an "unexpected ailment" that sent her to the hospital.

"Dr. Angelou was a national treasure whose life and teachings inspired millions around the world, including countless students, faculty and staff at Wake Forest, where she served as Reynolds Professor of American Studies since 1982," Wake Forest University said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Angelou's family and friends during this difficult time."

Born Marguerite Johnson in St. Louis on April 4, 1928, Angelou was raised in Stamps, Ark., and San Francisco, moving back and forth between her parents and grandmother. She was reportedly sent to California after sassing a white store clerk in Arkansas and, at other times, did not speak at all. She was raped by her mother's boyfriend at age 7 and did not speak for years afterward, instead learning by reading and listening.

"I loved the poetry that was sung in the black church: 'Go down Moses, way down in Egypt's land,'" Angelou told The Associated Press. "It just seemed to me the most wonderful way of talking. And 'Deep River.' Ooh! Even now it can catch me. And then I started reading, really reading, at about 7 ½, because a woman in my town took me to the library, a black school library. ... And I read every book, even if I didn't understand it."

By age 9, Angelou was writing poetry, and by 17 she was a single mother. In her early 20s, she danced at a strip club, ran a brothel and married Enistasious Tosh Angelos (the first of her three husbands) before divorcing. By her mid-20s, she performed alongside another future star — Phyllis Diller — at the Purple Onion in San Francisco. She also spent a few days with Billie Holiday, who was astute enough to tell her: "You're going to be famous. But it won't be for singing."

Angelou later renamed herself for the stage, choosing her childhood nickname before touring in "Porgy and Bess" and Jean Genet's "The Blacks" and dancing alongside Alvin Ailey. She also worked for years in Egypt and Ghana, where she met Malcolm X and remained close to him until his assassination in 1965. Three years later, Angelou helped the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., organize a march in Memphis, Tenn., where the civil rights leader was killed on Angelou's 40th birthday.

Angelou was little known outside of the theatrical community until "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," which was published in 1969. The memoir was occasionally attacked as "manipulative" melodrama and her passages on rape and teen pregnancy have made it a mainstay on the American Library Association's list of works that draw complaints from parents and educators.

"'I thought that it was a mild book. There's no profanity," Angelou told the AP. "It speaks about surviving, and it really doesn't make ogres of many people. I was shocked to find there were people who really wanted it banned, and I still believe people who are against the book have never read the book."

Angelou would later appear on several television programs, including the groundbreaking 1977 miniseries "Roots." She was also nominated for a Tony Award in 1973, won three Grammys her spoken-word albums and received an honorary National Book Award in 2013 for her contributions

YouTube Launches Creator Preview, Looks to Add Crowdfunding, Mobile Analytics App, More

YouTube has announced its intentions to add crowdfunding, a mobile app for content creators, and multi-language captions and subtitles.

In its inaugural Creator Preview video posted to the YouTube blog, the online video streaming platform revealed plans to keep content creators abreast of changes made to accommodate the results of their bi-annual "global satisfaction" survey. In the clip, members of the YouTube team discuss building a mobile app that allows users to manage their channels remotely, increasing monetization through ad revenue, and making official fans' DIY off-YouTube models of fundraising for their favorite content creators.

The topic of streaming monetization is a hot one these days. This news follows like-minded moves from companies like Audiam, which seeks to increase revenue streams for songwriters, labels, and publishers from user-generated videos that use copyrighted songs or master recordings. At last year's A2IM Indie Week, Jane Hu of YouTube's Next Lab re-iterated the importance of metadata and encouraged creators to develop non-music video content as well, while Ultra Music's head of digital strategy Dan Ghosh-Roy stressed the importance of labels deputizing artists to drive fans to their platform.

When reached by Billboard, Google had no comment outside of what was already in the video. They did suggest more details about this and other features would be revealed at the fifth annual VidCon later this June.

It makes sense that YouTube would want to bring these kinds of resources in-house after partnerships with crowdfunding sites like Indiegogo and Kickstarter to provide partner pages, video channels, and guides for for creators looking to make the most out of their brand. The hope is these new changes will address obstacles to content creators' financial success, including incorrect metadata, lack of mobile views, and not enabling Adsence and monetization. "YouTube is yours to use," Aaron Davis, CEO of Exploration.io, told Billboard in a recent interview addressing these very issues. "Your fans are there. Use it to grow."

Wiz Khalifa Jail Selfie Sparks Controversy

Taylor Gang leader Wiz Khalifa's decision to release a jail selfie behind bars this week has reportedly caught the attention of law enforcement and started an investigation. #LookAtMeNow

Reports claim Texas police are on the prowl to find out how Khalifa pulled off the shot.

El Paso cops are investigating a breach in jailhouse security ... they want to know how in the world Wiz Khalifa managed to sneak a selfie while he was in lockup. Now we're told police brass have launched an investigation because inmates are NOT allowed to take pics in the jail with their phones. Cops want to know if Khalifa was left unsupervised or if one of the jailers was a star f-er and facilitated the pic. (TMZ)
Khalifa spent a portion of Sunday (May 25) behind bars.

After being held for several hours -- putting his performance at Minnesota's 2014 Soundset festival in jeopardy -- the rapper was out of jail (charged with possession of .5 grams of marijuana) and boarding a private jet to get him to his set on time. (MTV)

Details of Wiz's unexpected run-in with law enforcement emerged online Sunday.

Rapper Wiz Khalifa (real name Cameron Thomaz) was arrested Sunday morning after being stopped by a TSA officer at the El Paso International Airport, E! News has confirmed. "The TSA Officer learned that Thomaz did not have any identification which led to him being sent for secondary screening," El Paso Chief of Police Gregory K. Allen said in a statement. "During that screening the TSA Officer located a metal container inside of the backpack which contained a prohibited item." (E! Online)

How the RIAA Would Fix Music Licensing

To help streamline and modernize the way music is licensed, the RIAA wants new blanket licenses and market-based royalty rates to replace the current system of one-by-one licensing and rates set by courts. These and other suggestions were made in the RIAA's response to the U.S. Copyright Office's request for comment on music licensing.

The RIAA believes any fix to the music licensing system should include a simplified, blanket license that pays a fair market value to creators and copyright owners. In its 52-page filing to the Copyright Office, the RIAA argues that a market-derived royalty system would benefit rights holders and creators, product greater consumer choice, cost savings for digital services due to simpler licensing procedures, improved transparency and accuracy of royalty payments, and help spur new business models and services by providing greater transparency of the costs and eliminating the delays caused by litigation.

“Modernizing the licensing system for musical works is a win for everyone -- from digital music services to songwriters, music publishers, artists, labels, and fans,” said Cary Sherman, CEO, Recording Industry Association of America, in a statement.  “That’s the only way this will work – it must be a collaborative exercise."

Here are the main suggestions in the RIAA's filing:

· Bundle the rights for reproduction, distribution and performance into a single licensing system. "It makes no sense to have three entirely separate processes for setting rates, licensing and paying for a single set of activities," the RIAA says in the filing.

· Replace Section 115, which establishes the compulsory right for mechanical reproductions of phonorecords, with a "modern, efficient blanket license" that would cover all rights involved with 21st-century music products. The blanket license would have a single process for obtaining licenses, paying royalties and distributing royalties to creators and rights holders. Either a new or an existing organization would administer this process. However, licenses for "third-party created product," such as synchronization rights for television and performances at live venues, would exist outside this new blanket license.

· Replace the Copyright Royalty Board and rate court, and the 17 mechanical rate categories, with "a rate that is an agreed, consistent, set percentage of label revenues from modern music products." Labels would negotiate rates on the open market, and publishers would get an agreed-upon percentage of the deals.

· Establish a pre-1972 copyright in the federal licensing system. Currently, pre-1972 sound recordings are excluded from the statutory licenses under which services such as Pandora and SiriusXM operate. These pre-1972 sound recordings, which the RIAA estimates comprise 10% of all usage on statutory services, are instead protected under various state laws.

· Establish a terrestrial performance right for sound recordings. While songwriters and publishers currently have a performance right for terrestrial radio, record labels and performing artists receive royalties from terrestrial radio only through direct negotiations. A number of labels, namely Warner Music Group and Big Machine Label Group, have negotiated deals with some large broadcasters.

· Create rate parity between digital services. Services that existed before 1998 -- satellite and cable radio -- pay statutory royalties using the 801(b)(1) rate standard rather than the "willing buyer, willing seller" standard used for Internet radio. Whether rates are set through direct negotiations or by the Copyright Royalty Board, the RIAA desires satellite and cable radio to pay market rates.

Music licensing is, as the RIAA put it, "byzantine" and "complex." The system for copyright and licensing was built in an era of physical media such as phonographs and printed sheet music. Now music is commonly streamed to computers and, increasingly, mobile devices. How music and other media -- such as music and album art -- are licensed needs to be updated.

Congress is already looking at the matter. House Judiciary chairman Bob Goodlatte announced last year his desire to conduct a comprehensive review of U.S. copyright law, and a number of hearings have already taken place. According to sources, music licensing will be the focus of a hearing in June by the House Judiciary subcommittee that oversees intellectual property.

Details of what allegedly went down at a Fatburger restaurant in Las Vegas surfaced online early Sunday.

According to several witnesses ... Floyd was eating inside the restaurant when T.I. walked up and started jawing at Floyd. It's unclear what caused the beef, but we're told T.I. swung at Floyd ... their giant bodyguards jumped in to separate them ... and then the all out melee began. Las Vegas PD arrived just as Floyd was leaving and we're told T.I. was already gone. (TMZ)
Reports also claimed footage of the incident would be released.

Police confirm one guy suffered a minor injury during the fight, but he refused treatment and did not want to cooperate with investigating officers. In other words ... no snitching. A rep for T.I. had no comment about the fight. We've obtained video of the brawl which we'll be posting shortly. (TMZ)

Pitbull, Jennifer Lopez World Cup Song a Flop?

PALACE NEWS (PMG)-The official World Cup song is definitely striking a chord - the wrong one with many in host country Brazil.

Since the recent release of FIFA's "We Are One (Ole Ola)," hordes of fans in Brazil have been slamming the official 2014 Cup theme.

Many expressed their frustration on Twitter under the tag (hash)VoltaWakaWaka - a plea for the return of the widely loved song that Colombian artist Shakira performed for the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

Although Brazilian Claudia Leitte is also featured in the official theme, critics say they don't understand why Cuban-American rapper Pitbull and Bronx-born Puerto Rican singer Jennifer Lopez were chosen for the song when there are so many other great musicians in the land of Bossa Nova.

Industry News

They also complain that the song is mostly in English and Spanish, leaving only a few seconds at the end for Leitte to sing in her native Portuguese.

"What I don't like about the music is that it's a poor, dull, generic pop theme," said Gaia Passarelli, a Brazilian music journalist and a former VJ for MTV Brazil. "It's a shame considering Brazil's rich musical tradition, which is admired all over the world."

"In the end, we lost a chance to do something rich, inspiring and cool. I'm feeling `saudades' for Shakira," Passarelli said, using a Portuguese word that roughly translates as painful longing.

While details of where the Weezy/Braun issues originate, the Biebs relied on Instagram to speak out.

The drama between Twist and Scooter had seemingly died down, but MTV News has learned that the clip was shot last night, as the YM team landed back home from their trip to the Cannes International Film Festival in France. No word, as to which particular Braun comment set Wayne off; he just seems to be sick of it all. (MTV)

Some media outlets suggested Braun had an issue with his client hanging out with YMCMB member Lil Twist.

Twist's friendship with Bieber ended after he was removed from the teen superstar's home following a series of run-ins with the law. He was portrayed as being a bad influence on Bieber, but Wayne won't let him take the fall. (Rap-Up)

Kanye & Kim Kardashian Wed at Florence's Forte di Belvedere

PALACE NEWS (PMG)-Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are officially "Bound" to each other.

The celebrity couple, who have made a habit of over-the-top, public displays of affection, got hitched Saturday in a decidedly private spot: a Renaissance fortress in Florence called the Forte di Belvedere or Fortezza di Santa Maria in San Giorgio del Belvedere. The city's mayor's office reported that the 300,000 euro ($420,000) rental fee for the fort would help fund restorations of Florence's art treasures.

The nuptials were confirmed to The Associated Press by Kardashian's representative, who noted the reporting of E! Online, the news site from the network that carries her reality show, "Keeping Up With The Kardashians." E! Online reported the wedding party consisted of her sisters, while stepfather Bruce Jenner walked her down the aisle. Andrea Bocelli and John Legend sang for the couple at the reception.

News Articles

The city's mayor's office had said a week earlier that the couple had rented Belvedere Fort for a wedding to be performed by a Protestant minister, adding a flurry of excitement in the entertainment world about the ceremony, which had been anticipated for months. In the days before the nuptials, the pair held court in Paris, parading in front of photographers for pre-wedding festivities. Kardashian posted a picture on the social media site Instagram of the gardens of fashion designer Valentino's 17th-century Chateau de Wideville west of Paris, where one of their events was being held. The couple also toured the Chateau of Versailles.

The duo, who have one child together, were not shy about their romance; he briefly appeared on her reality show, and he gushed about his love for her in a talk show hosted by her mother, Kris Jenner. A topless Kardashian also starred in his music video for "Bound 2," in which they simulated having sex on a motorcycle bike.

West, 36, proposed to Kardashian, 33, in October on her birthday. He rented out San Francisco's AT&T Park to pop the question.

But when it came to the wedding, media was only able to get photos of the many celebrity guests at the wedding.

Among the notables sighted arriving in Florence ahead of the nuptials were Steve McQueen, director of Oscar-winner `'12 Years a Slave"; Lala Anthony, wife of NY Knicks basketball star Carmelo Anthony; Jaden Smith, the actor and teenage son of Will and Jada Smith; and Joe Francis of `'Girls Gone Wild" video fame.

Industry News
The nuptials drew crowds of fans eager to witness the glitzy event, but they were kept far away from the heavily-walled 16th century fortress, which offers stunning views of Florence and surrounding Tuscan hills.

The rapper was recently quoted in the Florence newspaper La Nazione as saying he and Kardashian had come here previously incognito and he believed that their daughter, North, was conceived `'among the Renaissance masterpieces." The baby was born in June 2013.

It is the first marriage for West, and the third for Kardashian. Her last marriage, to professional basketball player Kris Humphries, in 2011, lasted 72 days. That ceremony was featured in a two-part TV special.
