New ‘Sin City: A Dame To Kill For’

The critically acclaimed color processing technique pioneered by Robert Rodriguez in 2005’s Sin City returns nearly a decade later in the red band trailer for the film’s sequel, which debuted at Comic-Con 2014 in San Diego.

The trailer for the neo-noir action thriller boasts technological improvements to the already cutting-edge visual effects of the first film, and features an especially intense Jessica Alba smoking in the trailer’s opening scene. Lady Gaga makes a cameo appearance as a waitress who gives Joseph Gordon-Levitt a dollar bill that will “take him to the moon.”

Like the original film, A Dame to Kill For pieces together several intertwining stories from Frank Miller’s graphic novel series Sin City. In the sequel, most plot lines are pulled from his second book, “A Dame To Kill For,” although Miller also draws from his sixth book’s short story “Just Another Saturday Night” and two original stories created exclusively for the film.

In one plot line, Dwight McCarthy, played by series newcomer Josh Brolin, is manipulated by former lover Ava Lord (Eva Green) and must combat her abusive, billionaire husband (Marton Csokas) and his bodyguard (Dennis Haysbert), all the while blind to Lord’s true intentions. Joseph Gordon-Levitt debuts as Johnny, a gambler who attempts to take down the most powerful man in Sin City, Senator Roark (Powers Boothe), and meanwhile Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, and Mickey Rourke follow up the events of “That Yellow Bastard” in the first installment of the series. Sin City: A Dame To Kill For will be released Aug. 22 by Dimension Films.
